Position Summary:

The Packaging Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all packaging operations, including production execution, team leadership, scheduling, inventory control, and performance management. This role ensures packaging runs efficiently, safely, and in alignment with production plans while maintaining strong collaboration with the Head Brewer to protect product quality and optimize throughput.

This is a working leadership role that balances floor presence with operational oversight, ensuring both day-to-day execution and continuous improvement

Key Responsibilities

Operational Oversight & Execution

  • Oversee all packaging activities (cans, kegs, specialty formats)
  • Ensure packaging runs are executed safely, efficiently, and on schedule
  • Provide floor support as needed while maintaining supervisory oversight
  • Ensure proper line setup, changeovers, and shutdown procedures

Team Leadership & Management

  • Directly manage and develop the Packaging Lead
  • Maintain accountability for overall packaging team performance
  • Support hiring, training, and development of packaging staff
  • Conduct performance reviews and address employee issues

The Packaging Lead manages the crew day-to-day; the Supervisor owns overall team performance.

Production Planning & Scheduling

  • Build and manage packaging schedules in coordination with Head Brewer
  • Align staffing with production needs
  • Adjust plans based on tank readiness, demand, and operational constraints

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure all packaged product meets quality standards
  • Enforce SOPs for:
  • Seam checks
  • DO control
  • Fill weights
  • Labeling compliance
  • Partner with Head Brewer and QC on quality standards and issue resolution

 Inventory & Cost Control

  • Own packaging materials inventory (cans, ends, kegs, cartons, etc.)
  • Review and validate purchase orders, pricing, and usage
  • Monitor and report:
  • Packaging loss
  • Yield
  • Cost per BBL
  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities

 Data Integrity & Reporting

  • Ensure accurate and timely entry of all packaging data into ERP system
  • Validate:
  • Production outputs
  • Loss reporting
  • Inventory movements

 Equipment & Maintenance Coordination

  • Ensure packaging equipment is maintained and operating effectively
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules
  • Troubleshoot and escalate major equipment issues

 Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Partner closely with Head Brewer to ensure:
  • Beer is packaged on time and in spec
  • Tank scheduling is optimized
  • Production plans are aligned
  • Communicate issues and constraints proactively

 Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure safe operation of all packaging activities
  • Enforce safety protocols and proper training
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements

 Requirements: 

  • Must reside in the county of San Diego, CA
  • 3-5+ years in brewery packaging or similar production environment
  • Strong knowledge of packaging systems (canning, kegging, QA processes)
  • Proven leadership and team development skills
  • Proven decision making and analytical skills.
  • Prior experience in a fast paced environment which is heavily integrated with other functional departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a long-term plan while multi-tasking, prioritizing and adapting to changing situations.
  • Professional and proficient verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Proficient with MS Office Applications and company ERP system
  • Must be able to frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 75–100 pounds (e.g., grain bags, full kegs) with assistance from team members or mechanical aids
