Coronado Brewing Wins Silver and Bronze Medals at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival®

SAN DIEGO – October 7, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is honored to announce it took home a silver and bronze medal at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition, the world’s largest commercial beer competition. The GABF, presented by the Brewers Association, recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded on October 5 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, in 107 beer categories covering 174 different beer styles (including all subcategories), establishing the best examples of each style in the country.

Coronado Brewing Company (Production Facility) was recognized in the competition’s second-largest category, American-style India Pale Ale, with 342 entries. Coronado’s Weekend Vibes IPA was awarded a bronze medal, beating out hundreds of entries from around the country. Weekend Vibes IPA was launched in October 2018 and since then, has quickly become the company’s second best-selling beer and has received numerous accolades and fan support. “Of all the awards I could choose to win, winning in the IPA category at GABF is at the top of the list,” says Mark Theisen, Head Brewer, Coronado Brewing Company. “I’m so proud of Weekend Vibes IPA taking bronze in the American IPA category. We put so much time and energy into nailing the recipe, and to get that validation from our peers is amazing.”

In addition to Weekend Vibes IPA taking a bronze in the IPA category, the company also took a silver medal for its Freebooter Barleywine (Pub Facility) in the Barley Wine-style Ale Category. “Freebooter is an American-style barleywine that our innovation brewer, Bart Gumpert, created,” says Theisen. “To medal in a category with such heavy hitting beers is a huge accomplishment. We’re stoked to have people try this small-batch beer while they can!”

In the 33rd edition of the GABF competition, 9,497 entries were submitted to the general competition, along with 113 Pro-Am and 70 Collaboration entries. The beer was made by 2,295 breweries from across the nation, with entries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Judging took place over the course of three days, with an international panel of 322 judges from 18 countries. “This year’s GABF competition was the largest and most competitive to date,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “The beers and talent were as impressive as ever, and I’m thrilled to congratulate this year’s winners for their achievements in brewing.”.

Coronado Brewing Debuts Third Beer in 2019 Art Series: Tiki Sunset Sour

SAN DIEGO – September 17, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is releasing Tiki Sunset Sour, the third installment of its 2019 Art Series. Coronado is proud to support emerging artists by featuring a fan-submitted Instagram photo on each of its quarterly releases. The third winner of the 2019 contest is Cody Poynor, a California-based landscape and aerial photographer. Poynor’s epic photo of a silhouetted surfer against a pink sunset is the inspiration for Tiki Sunset Sour.

Tiki Sunset is a kettle sour inspired by a classic tiki cocktail called the Chi-Chi. A close cousin to the Piña Colada, the Chi-Chi is made with pineapple, toasted coconut, and macadamia nuts. Tiki Sunset is a refreshing kettle sour brewed with all the flavors of a Chi-Chi cocktail, as well as the addition of lactose, for a smooth and refreshing taste of the islands. “We wanted to brew a kettle sour that is tart but not overly sour, allowing the pineapple, coconut, and macadamia nuts to shine through,” says Mark Theisen, Head Brewer, Coronado Brewing Company. “We are really happy with how it came out, and we’re excited for fans to get this limited-release beer while they can!”

Tiki Sunset Sour is available in 16oz can 4-packs and on draft, beginning Friday, September 20, at each of Coronado’s three locations. CORONADO BREWING DEBUTS BRAND REFRESH FOR ITS LINEUP OF COASTAL CLASSICS

SAN DIEGO – July 16, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is proud to announce a refreshed look for its Coastal Classics core beer lineup. As one of San Diego’s most established craft breweries, Coronado Brewing has gone through several branding iterations throughout its 23 years in business, with the latest version taking the brand in a bold, vibrant direction. “Coronado has evolved over the years, but we’ve never lost sight of our coastal roots,” says Brandon Richards, CEO, Coronado Brewing Company. “This brand refresh is the next step in our evolution to ‘stay coastal’ in a relaxed and not-so-literal way,” says Richards.

As a craft brewery with roots on Coronado Island, the company’s branding has always drawn inspiration from the coast. Over the years, the branding has evolved from muted, darker colors to the current light blue packaging that the company rebranded to in late 2014. The new direction takes the packaging to a clean white background with bold, banded color waves differentiating each of the Coastal Classics core brands, including Orange Ave. Wit, Mermaid’s Hoppy Red, and Islander IPA. “We wanted the refresh to pop off the shelf,” says Richards. “The new look is very clean and really gives prominence to both the brand and beer style, allowing for consumers to quickly identify our beers on a crowded shelf.”

The brand refresh was done in-house, led by Kyle Chapman, son of co-founder Ron Chapman. The Coastal Classics refresh complements the fresh direction the company took with its New Wave series of 16oz canned beers, including Weekend Vibes IPA, Never Better Double IPA, and Leisure Lagoon Hazy Pale Ale. “We are anchoring our portfolio with clean white backgrounds and bold use of color,” says Richards. “Our 16 oz cans are resonating with the primary beer drinking consumers and we wanted to capitalize on that momentum by breathing new life into our classic beers.”

The new packaging will have a staggered market entry with refreshed Orange Ave. Wit and Islander IPA 12oz bottles entering the market late July. Mermaid’s Red 12oz glass will follow in the fall. Coronado Brewing Launches Art Series #2: Salt Spray Sour Margarita Gose

SAN DIEGO – May 16, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is releasing the second of its 2019 Art Series cans, with Salt Spray Sour. The company is proud to support emerging artists by featuring a fan-submitted Instagram photo on each of its quarterly releases. The company’s first release, Cosmic Ocean Brut IPA, was incredibly well-received, and was even named one of the “30 Best Looking Beer Cans in America—2019.”  The winning photo for this second release was shot by ocean & surf photographer, Ryan Szot, of Cardiff By the Sea, CA. The photo features an aerial shot of a surfer in turquoise blue waters and perfectly captures the refreshing nature of the liquid inside the can.

Salt Spray Sour was inspired by warm summers in San Diego, and the desire for an easy-drinking beer for the season. “We thought the gose-style would be perfect for summer because its tart but not too sour, and the touch of sea salt makes you want to take another sip,” says Shawn Steele, Director of Brewing Operations, Coronado Brewing Company. “The lime, paired with the salt, makes this our fun interpretation of a margarita. We can’t wait for people to try it!” says Steele. Salt Spray Sour Margarita Gose pushes the boundaries on the style, coming in at 6.0% ABV, while maintaining its drinkability.

Salt Spray Sour will debut at Coronado Brewing’s three locations on Friday, May 24, in 16oz four-pack cans and on draft. The beer will hit broader retail availability at the end of the month and will be available throughout Coronado’s distribution network. CORONADO BREWING AND BELCHING BEAVER DEBUT TAIL & TOOTH COLLABORATION

SAN DIEGO – March 28, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is excited to announce the second installment of its unique two-part collaboration with Belching Beaver Brewery. The two San Diego-based breweries first came together in January to brew Tooth & Tail Hazy IPA—a double dry-hopped New England-style IPA bursting with tropical juiciness. The breweries reunited in March at Coronado’s Bay Park facility to brew Tail & Tooth Hazy IPA.

 

Named for the mermaid’s tail and the beaver’s tooth, Tail & Tooth/Tooth & Tail each interpreted the hazy IPA style with unique hop profiles and London III yeast. Belching Beaver’s Tooth & Tail featured a vibrant blend of Mosaic, Idaho 7, Citra and Motueka, while Coronado’s Tail & Tooth showcases Idaho 7, Azacca and El Dorado. “We knew wanted to each brew a hazy IPA, but with slightly different hop profiles,” says Shawn Steele, Director of Brewery Operations, Coronado Brewing Company. “Tail & Tooth is super juicy and drinks like ripe pineapple. We’re stoked with the results.”

 

Tail & Tooth Hazy IPA will debut at Coronado Brewing’s three locations on Friday, March 29, in 16oz four-pack cans and on draft. CORONADO BREWING LAUNCHES 2019 ART SERIES WITH COSMIC OCEAN BRUT IPA

SAN DIEGO – February 20, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is debuting the first of its 2019 Art Series releases, with Cosmic Ocean Brut IPA. The company is proud to support emerging artists by featuring a fan-submitted Instagram photo on each of its quarterly releases. The first winner of the Instagram photo contest is Anthony Drake, a southern California-based outdoor and lifestyle photographer. Drake’s stunning photo of the night sky over the beach is the inspiration for Cosmic Ocean Brut IPA.

 

Cosmic Ocean is a single-hop Brut IPA. Mosaic hops give the beer bright grapefruit and pineapple notes bolstered by a subtle coconut flavor from the addition of toasted rice flakes. True to brut fashion, Cosmic Ocean finishes bone dry, with an effervescent and refreshing finish. “We wanted to make a brut that delivered a champagne-like experience,” says Shawn Steele, Director of Brewing Operations, Coronado Brewing Company. “The inherent fruity and tropical notes in Mosaic are a nice balance to the extreme dryness of this beer. It checks all the boxes for what you want in a good brut-style IPA,” says Steele.

 

Cosmic Ocean Brut IPA will debut at Coronado Brewing’s three locations on Thursday, February 21, in 16oz four-pack cans and on draft. CORONADO BREWING DEBUTS LEISURE LAGOON HAZY PALE ALE

SAN DIEGO – February 13, 2019Coronado Brewing Company is debuting Leisure Lagoon Hazy Pale Ale, the latest in its hop-forward lineup of year-round releases. Named for an inlet in Mission Bay, Leisure Lagoon is the company’s first year-round hazy offering, following the success of its highly anticipated seasonal hazy, North Island IPA. “Our fans can’t get enough of hazy beers” says Shawn Steele, Director of Brewing Operations, Coronado Brewing Company. “We are excited to offer a lower ABV option that doesn’t skimp on any of the bright and juicy hop notes that people have come to expect with this style.”

 

Leisure Lagoon Hazy Pale Ale is a unique spin on the hazy trend. It combines the best of East Coast and West Coast pale ales, using classic West coast hops, then fermenting with London III yeast for a softer mouthfeel and accentuated fruitiness. The end result is brighter and juicier than a typical west coast pale ale, with pleasant bitterness and easy-drinking ABV. “We spent a lot of time experimenting with different hop profiles and alcohol percentages,” says Steele. “At the end of the day, this is the beer that we all want to drink. It’s got the classic piney, dank, citrus hop character, with more fruitiness and softer mouthfeel from the yeast. We’re stoked with how it turned out and we think our fans will love it, too. It’s perfectly crushable.”

 

Leisure Lagoon Hazy Pale Ale will debut at Coronado Brewing’s three locations on Friday, February 15, in 16oz six-pack cans and on draft. The beer will hit broader retail availability later in February and will be available to buy in stores throughout Coronado’s distribution network. The company will also host an outdoor Leisure Lagoon Luau on Saturday, March 2, complete with luau-themed food, live music, and beer specials. We have a lot of rad team members at Coronado Brewing, and every now and then it’s fun to profile the people behind the beer. This week, we’re diving into the world of Quality Control, with our very own Deanna Boyce.

What’s your title and what do you do at Coronado Brewing Company?

My title is Quality Control Manager, and I am in charge of running the laboratory for Coronado Brewing Company.

How did you get into lab work/quality control for the brewing industry?

To begin with, I earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder. When I graduated, I took a bit of time to decide where I wanted my future to go. I wanted to work with a company whose product I was passionate about, rather than taking the first opportunity I could get (side note: I graduated in the heart of the recession and there were not many opportunities).  With that thought in mind, I narrowed down my interests to two fields: Fireworks and Beer.  Haha—you can see which path I went down! After getting my degree, I moved to California and began my new journey with the UCSD Extension–Brewing Certification Program.  This program was excellent for me to network with locals who were interested in beer or who were already working in the brewing industry.  I worked for Karl Strauss Brewing Company for approximately 3 years in a variety of roles before getting my position at Coronado Brewing Company. It’s been a fun winding journey, but I’m so happy about where I have ended up.

What’s something surprising that people might not know or expect about your job or what QC entails?

Whenever I tell people that I work in Quality Control, they immediately joke that my job must mean I drink all day.  That’s only partly true–there is way more to my job than sipping on a beer all day. There are three parts to QC at a brewery: analytical testing, microbiological, and sensory.  Most of my day is spent testing analytics and making sure our beers match our specs. For example, this means that alcohol matches what we say on the bottle, the carbonation is perfect, or that our Mermaid Red is the brilliant red that our customers expect. Microbiology includes anything and everything to do with yeast, bacteria, and enzymes for our brewing. We want to keep our brewing yeast from mixing with the wild yeast, and our sours the only thing that is souring at the brewery. Sensory is the part where you might do a taste test to see if a person can taste the difference in an ingredient change. Sensory is the glamorous part of the job, but it’s only one side of the QC triangle.

Why is QC so important?

Every brewery is capable of making an excellent beer with the right people and ingredients; however, not every brewery is able to replicate that beer over and over again. The true sign of a great brewery is that they can make a wonderful beer consistently not only from day to day, but from year to year. We use QC to accomplish this feat. What people don’t realize about brewing is that we are an agriculturally based product. The seasons and climate greatly affect our ingredients which can cause fluctuations in the beer. Just imagine what a late rain in the harvesting season does to the grains we use. In this example, it would cause the grains to start to germinate. This process converts the coveted starches we want in brewing to an unusable form. Therefore, each grain provides less brewing material than it did in seasons past. If we used the same amount of grain as last year, we would get less alcohol at the end of brewing. QC is so important because we can test and adjust our recipes to ensure the same great beer is created.  It not only looks at things before the brewing process even starts but can also catch mistakes in-process such as a low carbonation. QC ensures that the customer gets a great beer very time.

What’s your favorite CBC beer?

I’m currently in love with Never Better DIPA.  Before it came out, I wouldn’t say I was a double IPA fan, because many on the market were too harsh in either their alcohol content or hops. However, this one is different. I love the flavor, aroma, and mouthfeel of this beer. It’s so easy drinking. I have gifted this beer to many a hop fan, and every single one has enjoyed it.

San Diego, CA – December 5, 2017 – Coronado Brewing Company is continuing the expansion of its Bay Park Brewery and Tasting Room with the addition of a quick-service kitchen. The new kitchen gives Coronado customers a reliable food option to enjoy with the 25 Coronado beers on tap at the Tasting Room. “We’ve been talking about a kitchen in this space since we first opened in 2013,” says Kasey Chapman, COO, Coronado Brewing Company. “The kitchen enables us to host more events, create special menu items to pair with our beers, and offer food throughout the day and into the evening.” The kitchen is currently in its soft opening, with an official opening date set for this Thursday, December 7, 2017.

The curated menu revolves around beer-friendly pizzas, salads, and sandwiches. “We wanted options that allow us to execute in an efficient and consistent manner,” says Chapman. The company is no stranger to food, having operated a successful brewpub on Coronado Island since 1996, and another quick service location in Imperial Beach since 2014.

The new kitchen is one of many changes happening at the company’s brewery and tasting room. Over the past year, the company has invested in three new bright tanks and a GEA centrifuge. Construction is currently underway to add windows and climate control to the tasting room eating/drinking space, while making room for a new 72-head bottling line, that is expected to be completed in spring of 2018. “We want our tasting room to be a relaxed space where people feel comfortable hanging out for a while, and watching the action in the brewhouse and packaging lines,” says Chapman.
